I find that side access is best to get to the downpipe studs, start at the back on remove the panels from there forward. I have managed to do the same job by just removing the lower grey side panels only but it does make for very tight access. I have found two tools very useful when doing this job: A ratchet ring spanner and a thin quarter inch socket set with the long extention and bendy UJ going into the socket. With the latter you can manoeuvre the socket onto the stud nut from underneath passing the extension between the two swingarm/mainstand struts that go from one side to the other.
Good Luck

And be prepared for a head stud to shear. They often do. Copious WD40 or whatever, wire brush, more WD40 or hacksaw across the point of the nuts and split them off rather than trying to unscrew them then run a die down the thread to clean it up and use new nuts.
To get the belly pan off you need the footboards off. To get those off you need the tunnel top off. To get that off you need the seat off. Before all that remove lower and upper rear side panels. Start with the brakelight panel and grey 'bumper' below it.

Just to add - it's far quicker to remove all the plastics than to do the job envisaged without doing so.

Plus you get a look at other 'stuff' that might need attention.
